EXOSKELETON

Many animals do not have a bony internal skeleton. but instead have a hard outer casing called an exoskeleton. The exoskeleton has the some function as an internal skeleton, providing strength and support; it also protects the soft, inner organs. To permit growth, some animals periodically shed their exoskeleton and form a new, larger.
