Essential for insulation and fight, feathers grow from bird's outer skin and are made up of tiny hollow fibers. The sleek outer wing feathers, and a small group of feathers called the alula, are shaped to maximize lift. Inner wing feathers (the main and lesser coverts) provided overall contouring. Fluffy cold and heat. Tail feathers are used to steer a course and aid balance; sometimes they are also used to attract a mate. The colour of feathers often depends upon their use-either as camouflage or for a courtship display.
