POP ART

The term pop art was coined in the 1950s by the critic Lawrence Alloway. He used it to describe works by artist who employed popular imagery drawn from advertising, comic strips, film, and television. The materials and techniqus long used by abstract and action painters acrylic paints, stencils, silk screens, spray guns- were applied to figurative uses pop artist. The leading pop artist include Roy Litchtenstein, Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, and Andy Warhol.
