From small arms such as handguns to heavy artillery such as howitzers, all guns are classed by the width  (calibre) of the barrel. Whatever the type, an explosion in one area propels a bullet or shell from the barrel towards its target. While many guns are destined for military action, others are used by police, or by civilians in sport, for hunting game, or for self-defence.
