pH

The concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution is known as its pH. This values gives an indication of the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. The pH value can be determined by the use of indicators, such as universal indicator paper, which contain compounds that change color over a certain pH range. A pH value may fall anywhere on a scale from 0 (strongly acidic) to 14 (strongly alkaline), with a value of 7 representing neutrality.
