Galaxies are classed as spiral, irregular, or elliptical. Spiral galaxies vary in the size and structure of the central hub and spiral arms; of these, barred spiral galaxies- to which our galaxy, the Milky way , may long- have a central bar consisting of millions of stars, which rotate in unity. Spiral and irregular galaxies hold quantities of gas from which new stars are created. Elliptical galaxies contain old red stars and practically no gas.
